If setup and weight are too big a hassle so you leave it in a storage room/closet and never use it, having a 12" scope doesn't do you any good. I've also heard great things about Meade's Schmidt-Cassegranian scopes as well.Īgain, the one you'll USE is what matters. My scope ran me close to $900 but that was with a combo deal that added in a bunch of eyepieces and filters and a huge power brick to run the thing out in the field, you can get the scope itself for around $600 I believe. As a beginner looking to enjoy the sky and learn the science and math more slowly, I can't say enough for what thats worth. I'm not great with star charts and locating stuff in the sky yet, but once I get my scope aligned I can tell it to find any 1 of like 50,000 different celestial sights (planets, nebulae, galaxies etc) and it'll do all the work for me. The Celestron I bought came with a very capable tripod as well as a motorized locator feature which to me is indispensable. Vibrations picked up and transmitted to the scope can ruin great viewing. make sure you get a good quality mount with the scope or it'll all be for naught. not something easily done with 150 pound dobsonian. I'm hoping to road trip out to Arizona later this year and take it with me to take advantage of the extreme visibility out there. it's got enough power to see Jupiter and Saturn clearly and remains light enough to throw in the back of my car and take with me to places with wide open sight lines and dark skies. Schmidt-Cassegranian (shorter wide tubed telescopes) are the best combination of aperatrure, portability and function IMO and I recently bough the Celestron Nextar 6inch and LOVE it. I definitely advise saving up and spending as much as you possibly can afford, and viewing it as something you're going to have for years and years, maybe for the rest of your life. Dobsonians are great for big aperature (8/10/12") at an affordable price but they weigh a freaking ton so you won't likely be taking them out and about with you often, which is a big consideration if you don't have a great view of the sky from your home. The best telescope you can buy is the one you're going to use.
